Winter
Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing
Snow without ski lifts: snowshoeing through the beech forest of Bosco di Sant'Antonio or gliding along the cross-country loops around Aremogna.
You don't need to go downhill skiing to enjoy winter in Alto Sangro. With snowshoes or cross-country skis you head into snowy woods and white plateaus, in silence.
Where
- Bosco di Sant'Antonio, near Pescocostanzo: in winter the ancient beech forest is one of the most beautiful places in the area, with routes suitable even for first-time snowshoers.
- Piano dell'Aremogna, above Roccaraso: home to the cross-country loops, across a wide plateau.
How
Snowshoes and cross-country skis can be rented locally. For your first outings, or to go off the beaten track, it is worth hiring a mountain guide: they know the terrain and the snow conditions.
Dress in layers, bring a hot drink and head back before sunset, when the temperature drops quickly. If you like, we can give you the right contacts: message us on WhatsApp.
